What to Expect

The New Programs Engineering team works at the front end of the design and development cycle by studying, simulating, building, and validating Tesla’s future vehicle concepts. New Programs Engineers interact with cross-functional partners from the Design, Vehicle Engineering, Powertrain Engineering teams and others to develop 3D designs, mules, prototypes, and demonstrators used for informing downstream engineering efforts. This is a multidisciplinary design engineering position with a focus on the design, modification, and bring-up of vehicle harnesses. 

What You’ll Do
Develop harnesses for prototype vehicles and early phase vehicle programs
Design and optimize 3D harness routing and packaging for electromechanical vehicle systems
Identify, evaluate, select, and procure harness components for prototype applications
Create harness MFG drawings/rework instructions for complex vehicle wire harnesses.  Working with external suppliers and internal prototyping build team to take 3D designs to physical product for development
Manage harness installation process during prototype vehicle builds
Troubleshoot and quality check harnesses in the fabrication, assembly and bring up stages of mule builds
Innovate, develop, and improve harness development through the build process.  
Design ancillary parts for harness and low voltage system integration for prototype applications
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
Minimum of 2 years of relevant harness design experience
First principles knowledge of vehicle low voltage systems, high voltage powertrain systems, EMC Strategies, and vehicle communications protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet)
Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals: thermal, heat dissipation, vibration, strength, durability, corrosion-prevention, materials, etc.
Demonstrated effectiveness in handling multiple priorities, proactively organizing workloads, and meeting tight delivery timelines Excellent communicator, resourceful, and mindful of time management
Detail-oriented personality with effective documentation and reporting
Proficiency in CAD (Computer Aided Design) software (CATIA preferred)
Familiarity with various mechanical prototyping processes including 3D Printing, CNC Machining, Welding, Sheet Metal Fabrication
Ability to travel 2-3 times a year to collaborate with teams in other locations and support prototype builds
