What to Expect
Tesla Infrastructure Engineering is looking for a Process Design Engineer to support process design of automotive factories, high-performance computing and data storage centers, and battery manufacturing facilities. The Process Design team strives to create the factory of the future by bringing conceptual designs to life, producing cutting-edge detailed designs of chemical and utility systems that are fully integrated with Tesla’s advanced manufacturing processes.
What You’ll Do
Apply engineering fundamentals and a broad set of process engineering tools to solve technical problems and create novel detailed designs for various process and chemical systems such as bulk solids equipment, reacting systems, separations equipment, and fired equipment
Lead front-end and detailed process designs for complex and program-level projects, including scope development, Basis of Design documentation, PFDs, P&IDs, pressure drop analysis and modeling (i.e. Pipe-Flo), pressure relief valve calculations, equipment sizing and datasheets, process simulation (i.e. Aspen Plus), and supporting Sequence of Operations / Controls Narrative documents
Provide technical expertise to the engineering/design team and other groups within Tesla as a subject matter expert (SME)
Participate in commercial contracting activities, including development of scopes of work, evaluation of bid packages, performing bid analysis, competitive bid leveling, and working with Procurement to prepare commercial subcontracts
Participate in field construction and commissioning activities by serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution
Review process design work performed by others on the Process Team
Provide process engineering support to facilities operations and manufacturing teams to help resolve process bottlenecks and other long-standing issues and mentor less experienced engineers on the team
Develop tools and work processes to reduce design time and automate repetitive tasks
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience
8+ years of experience in chemical process design, process improvement or operations. Emphasis on design of new installations is required. A combination of experience with an owner/operator and an EPC firm is desired
Experience with the following processes and equipment: bulk solids handling, slurry systems, heterogeneous and homogeneous reacting systems, solid/liquid separations equipment, crystallization systems, fired equipment, and loadout and custody transfer equipment
Registration as a Professional Engineer is preferred
Subject matter expertise related to North American / United States codes, standards, and regulations (API, ASME, ASME/BPVC, ANSI, ASTM, ISO, NFPA, UL, etc.)
Experience with pressure relief system sizing, selection, and design
Ability to lead or participate in process hazard evaluations and HAZOP reviews of the equipment listed above
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and Pipe-Flo. Revit experience is a plus
Ability to adapt, multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment with evolving changes in design requirements. A positive, “do the impossible” attitude and ability to communicate with peers and stakeholders at all levels including piping designers, stress engineers, other engineering disciplines, customers, and executives is essential
