At Amazon, our team is responsible for developing an in-depth understanding of our current fulfillment network and designing our future networks. We belong to the primary science organization in Amazon Operations that works on a variety of strategic problems in key areas including but not limited to inbound, outbound, inventory placement, air and ground transportation. As an engineering team embedded within a science organization, our team’s interests are exceptionally broad in nature impacting the design and evolution of Amazon’s global supply chain. As a Sr. Applied Scientist in our team, you will work as a liaison between our engineers and scientists within and outside of our organization and Amazon’s business teams to drive our vision forward by designing and influencing the next generation of software systems for order fulfillment. A few of our active projects where you will play a key role include – simulation of Amazon’s inbound and outbound systems to experiment with new design ideas and optimizing inventory placement across Amazon’s fulfillment network to reduce costs.

As a Sr. Applied Scientist, you will work closely with research scientists, applied scientists, and software engineers to define the vision of key order fulfillment systems and prototype the promising ideas. You will also contribute towards a range of interactive web-based tools that our team has developed to visualize key operations metrics at large scale to ensure that our supply chain stays healthy at all times. In this role, you will get a unique opportunity to work closely with both business and technical teams while building software systems entirely on native AWS using services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SageMaker, Kinesis, Fargate, Redshift, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, Athena, AppSync and QuickSight.

A successful candidate will have an established background in learning, researching, presenting and developing new ideas with high customer impact in a fast-paced environment. They will also be skilled in deriving actionable insights from Big Data through use of statistics, AI/ML powered technical solutions and other analytical techniques. They should also have knowledge and experience in different optimization methods, discrete-event simulations, and control.

About the team
Our team is a mix of software development engineers and data engineers who work closely with research scientists and applied scientists on a variety of strategic projects. We also partner with various business teams within Amazon Operations to deliver tactical value from our business insights.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

– 3+ years of building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application experience
– PhD, or Master’s degree and 6+ years of applied research experience
– Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
– Experience with conducting research in a corporate setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

– Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc.
– Experience with large scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark etc.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $150,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $260,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
