Consider before applying: This position is expected to start in January and continue through April/May. Internships are in-person for 40 hours a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Please consider before submitting an application.
International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week. Many students will be limited to part-time depending on their academic standing.

About the Team
Tesla’s Software Platforms team provides the foundation on which the in-vehicle user experience is built. We build the software platform (kernel, bootchain, drivers, and lower level userspace platform services) for our innovative Infotainment hardware. This includes high resolution touch displays, high definition audio, bluetooth/wifi/cellular connectivity, USB, cameras, all connected to high performance multi-core processors and GPUs. Our software is based on Linux, GNU toolchain, buildroot, and other open source projects, delivering the security, capability, and performance demanded by our user experience.
What You’ll Do
Read and quickly comprehend a large code base with many internal and external code dependencies.
Assess how code changes impact the performance, maintainability, reliability, and security of the product
Ability to contribute to each stage of the software feature development lifecycle: Defining a feature, identifying the code changes needed, assessing impact and risks, defining and executing test plan, rolling out to customers, tracking performance in the field
Understand impacts of hardware changes on firmware
Triage incoming issues across multiple components (assess priority, find an owner, articulate urgency and impact)
Develop proficiency in a variety of industry and internal software tools to efficiently gather and analyze data and root cause issues
Identify gaps in support for a project and dig in to contribute or help delegate
Use existing available hardware in innovative ways to solve problems
Support manufacturing, vehicle service, product security, and reliability teams in using our system
Assess and contribute to architecture decisions on new products
What You’ll Bring
Linux kernel fundamentals
Systems Software experience
Experience coding in C/C++
Familiarity with a broad set of common programming languages (Python, C/C++, Go, Bash/Shell, etc)
Ability to quickly identify which part of the system is responsible for an issue
Experience with board/chip bringup is a plus
Strong build, debug and test skills and experience
Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills
Experience using hardware debug tools (DMM, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and software debug tools (GDB, KGDB, JTAG) is a plus
Experience in embedded software and/or firmware development preferred
