The Tesla Autopilot & Electronics PD team is looking for motivated individuals to join us in shaping the future of Autonomy with the Tesla Semi.

 As Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation, working on the development of Electronic Control Units (ECU) – vital components that drive the Tesla Semi’s advancements in Autonomy. You’ll have the opportunity to take full ownership of your projects, guiding them from initial concept and architecture all the way to vehicle launch.

What You’ll Do

Design & Development: Use CAD software to design parts, assemblies, and mechanisms, ensuring that they are optimized for manufacturability and assembly
Prototyping & Testing: Build and test prototypes to validate designs, conduct simulations, and analyze results to continuously refine and improve your work
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to present and discuss design concepts, ensuring alignment and addressing any potential challenges
Problem Solving: Apply creative problem-solving skills during the design and development phases, including conducting root cause analysis and addressing any issues that arise
Documentation: Prepare accurate and detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and bills of materials (BOMs), to support manufacturing and assembly processes
Project Management: Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, coordinating with other teams to ensure deadlines are met and projects remain on track
Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about the latest industry trends, materials, and technologies, and incorporate best practices into your design work
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor or Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and 1-3 years of industry equivalent experience
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including emails, preparing slide presentations, and presenting technical concepts to multi-disciplinary teams
Works well in collaborative team atmospheres
Proficiency in 3D CAD (CATIA preferred)
Wide knowledge of basic engineering materials and manufacturing processes
Experience in prototyping quick-turn, high fidelity mechanisms and concepts to enable architecture down-selects and data collection
Working knowledge of FEA principles and how to leverage input for system convergence
GD&T knowledge, tolerance analyses (high-volume), experience releasing 2D drawings and FAI/CPK dimensional reports
Creative problem solving, with experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and DOE creation
