What to Expect

Tesla Energy is looking for an experienced and skilled Engineering leader to lead the Residential Energy Hardware team. The role requires both strong technical and people skills and a track record to back up both. You should be comfortable debugging hardware issues in the lab, steering major product architecture reviews, and scoping team goals and expectations. You’ll be responsible for both technical innovation and engineering process improvement – making the best energy products in the world better, while improving our design cycle timing and efficiency. 

 

The Residential Energy mechanical design team is an fast moving & innovative team responsible for Tesla products like Powerwall, Energy Gateway, and Tesla Solar Inverter. You will be responsible for ownership and design of a family of energy products from concept to mass production. You will own all aspects of performance, reliability, and manufacturability of these products. This is one of the few teams at the company that works on both core Tesla tech, high power distribution, while also working on products that everyday people interact with. 

What You’ll Do
Build positive team culture and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional teams. Direct Mechanical Design Engineers in full lifecycle product development 
Own the system level design of energy products through production, launch, and ramp 
Collaborate & drive other teams inside Tesla (Manufacturing, Test, NPI, Supply Chain) 
Drive engineering process improvements within the team 
Lead design and architecture reviews of mechanical systems and components. Review detailed mechanical design analysis including thermal, structural, design for assembly, and design for test
Generate and maintain product and component design requirements 
Drive prioritization & goals for the team 
Nurture the career growth and development of your team 
What You’ll Bring
8+ years of mechanical product design experience. A track record of taking multiple products to market. 
3+ years of management experience or experience in a technical leadership role 
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience 
Strong engineering fundamentals across a breadth of disciplines (thermals, fluids, structural mechanics) 
Experience designing for high-volume assembly and manufacturing & a variety of manufacturing techniques (injection molding, stamping, casting, etc.) 
Experience designing products for outdoor environments, including IP/NEMA environmental seals 
Experience defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data 
Proficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 experience a plus but not mandatory 
Experience with parametric CAD and the desire to drive CAD best practices across the team, preferred 
Experience with battery engineering including design to UL9540A, preferred
