What to Expect
The R&D Test Systems Engineering (TSE) team is responsible for identifying, designing, building, and commissioning scalable test solutions to accelerate product development cycles by leveraging Tesla’s technology to reduce cost and increase flexibility. TSE is a rare team at Tesla that supports both vehicle and energy programs across R&D, engineering, and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to contribute towards all aspects of Tesla’s businesses and directly impact Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
The team is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Senior Electrical Engineer to join us in our mission. In this role, you will leverage Tesla’s technologies (high-power bidirectional AC-DC and DC-DC converters, motor/powertrain/chassis dynamometers, inverters, data acquisition, software systems, etc.) and develop end-to-end hardware test solutions. These solutions will be integrated with the final test system or equipment and will require close collaboration with cross-functional groups within TSE and end-users across Tesla.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, validate, and integrate end-to-end electrical hardware test solutions to support product development, testing, and manufacturing teams across Tesla (power electronics, motors, powertrain, battery, etc.)
Ownership of PCB electronics and electrical sub-systems – specifications, design, prototyping, validation testing, and system integration
Develop electrical schematics, BOM, harness drawings, system diagrams, etc
Cross-functional collaboration with Mechanical, Software, Firmware, Regulatory, Testing, Manufacturing, Build and Operations teams
Test equipment bring-up, commissioning, root cause analysis and troubleshooting field issues at various Tesla locations globally
Create documentation for test equipment certification, operation, and maintenance
Coach and mentor other Engineers, Interns, and Technicians to develop their technical skills and experience
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
At least 4 years of relevant experience
Hands-on hardware design, testing, and debugging experience in power electronics (AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC converters) and low-power analog, digital circuits
Experience working with high-voltage and high-power systems, experience in PCB layout with signal integrity, noise, and EMI considerations (Altium experience preferred)
Experience with modeling and circuit simulation tools such as MATLAB-Simulink, LTspice, etc.
Experience with embedded programming (microcontrollers, DSP, etc.) and digital communication protocols (CAN, RS-485, SPI, I2C, etc.)
Strong knowledge of dynos, motors, drives, power systems, and switchgear components. Good understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM), FMEA tools/process, and quality control
Experience with laboratory test equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, high-voltage differential probes, current probes, power analyzers, data acquisition modules, etc
Experience with test automation and data analysis in NI LabVIEW, Python, etc. and enterprise tools such as Jira, Confluence, MS Office, etc
Awareness of UL and CE electrical safety requirements, NEC and international installation codes, and EMC requirements relevant to the design of power converters
