What to Expect

Consider before submitting an application:

This position is expected to start January 2025 and continue through the entire Spring term (i.e. through April/May 2025) or into Summer 2025 if available. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships.

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

Energy Firmware

The Energy Firmware team is bringing battery and power electronics technology to the grid to facilitate a renewable energy ecosystem, and increase grid reliability and versatility. Tesla is leveraging its breakthrough powertrain technology and manufacturing scale to develop and deploy grid connected storage at residential, industrial, and utility levels. Tesla Energy is looking for a Firmware Engineering Intern to develop next generation software for product functionality, diagnostics, testing, and validation. The ideal candidate is proficient in C; experience in Python, strong experience collaborating with colleagues and communicating complex technical, must be detail-oriented with an ability to think creatively and produce “outside of the box” solutions

Energy Products Reliability 

The Energy Mechanical Thermals Products Reliability team is a diverse, multi-disciplinary group of engineers focused on delivering the most reliable, robust and capable energy storage and solar products to our customers – both residential and industrial! The team is looking for passionate engineering students with a background in mechanical/thermals – excited about working hands-on with industry-leading sustainable technologies! The ideal candidate has experience & working knowledge of basic mechanical engineering principles, thermal system components (pumps, valves, radiators, heatsinks, etc). Hands- on experience with standard lab tools (power tools, multi-meter, etc). Experience or fundamental understanding of coding/scripting (especially Python)

Thermal Design

The Energy Thermal Design team is a close-knit group of hands-on mechanical engineers bringing battery, charging, and renewable technologies to the world to facilitate a renewable energy ecosystem and redefine the way we all will use energy in the future. As part of the Thermal Design Team, you will design and package the thermal systems that make Tesla Energy products world class. The role requires collaboration with the architecture team, adjacent design teams, manufacturing, and service, and requires the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to design thermal assemblies that are at the core of Tesla’s success. Our team is composed of individuals who are fast-moving, self-motivated, resilient, who love to solve difficult problems, and are team players. The ideal candidate has engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and electronics, basic understanding of material science of components used in mechanical design (metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, etc. Demonstrated ability or ability to learn to create products: CAD design to hand on prototyping. Preferred knowledge in thermal analysis and CFD experience, knowledge of GD&T, finite element analysis and design for reliability concepts, experience with CATIA V5 or V6, Working knowledge of Matlab or Python, direct machine shop skills a plus

Modeling and Validation

The Energy Thermal Modeling and Validation team is looking for an intern to drive thermal modeling and test efforts on new designs for upcoming projects. In this role you will shepherd an early-stage design by expanding on existing models and running initial performance testing. You will work across several groups to define and accomplish the required testing. As an active contributor to the team, you will help create and manage test plans, prepare test set ups and verify model performance through testing. This role will enable you to follow through on that testing by analyzing and presenting data that will be integrated into systems design models. The ideal candidate has Coursework in Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Matlab experience, Labview/Data Acquisition Set Up Experience, data analysis, report writing, and presentation skills, experience with CFD – Star CCM+ preferred, experience with CAD. Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology and electrochemistry is a plus, self-managed and committed to working in a fast-paced environment, experience in Python, or Simulink
