What to Expect
The R&D Test Systems Engineering (TSE) team is responsible for identifying, designing, building, and commissioning scalable test solutions to accelerate product development cycles by leveraging Tesla’s technology to reduce cost and increase flexibility. TSE is a rare team at Tesla that supports both vehicle and energy programs across R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to contribute towards all aspects of Tesla’s businesses and directly impact Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
The team is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Senior Electrical Engineer to join us in our mission. In this role, you will leverage Tesla’s technologies (high-power bidirectional AC-DC and DC-DC converters, motor/powertrain/chassis dynamometers, inverters, data acquisition, software systems, etc.) and develop end-to-end hardware test solutions. These solutions will be integrated with the final test system or equipment and will require close collaboration with cross-functional groups within TSE and end-users across Tesla.
The ideal candidate takes pride in their design and aesthetics, hands-on work, analytical ability, communication skills and attention to details. A typical day of work includes working with multidisciplinary and cross functional groups through the design cycles to refine and implement the product specification targets.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, validate, and integrate end-to-end hardware test solutions to support product development, testing, and manufacturing teams across Tesla (power electronics, motors, powertrain, battery, etc.)
Identify technology gaps or pain points, architect and design novel, robust product systems from first principles and deliver superior solutions with cost, lead time, performance improvements
Design packaging and components that provide airflow management, coolant and refrigerant flow management, optimizing for efficiency, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability
Modeling and testing for stress, thermal, fluid, and mechanical aspects of machines/components, that perform effectively while exposed to daily abuse of a R&D environment
Collaborate with thermal, systems, electrical, supply chain, manufacturing, service/deployment teams, and reliability teams to take designs from prototype through high volume production
Create high quality drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies
See through design/build/integration/validation phases, coordinate internally and externally to ensure the success of test product development and deployment
What You’ll Bring
6+ years of experience as Mechanical/Mechatronics/Automation Engineer with focus in automation, machine design, robotics, and product development
Degree in Electrical, Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
Excellent mechanical and electrical first principles skills, experience with software. Demonstrated interdisciplinary skill is a plus
Strong understanding of fundamentals of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. Proficiency in numerical simulation of heat and fluid flow
Experience with lab and test equipment (power supplies, electronic loads, o-scopes, DMM’s, lathe, mill etc.), ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings. Design experience with CAD software such as Solidworks, Altium, Eagle is a bonus
Control PLC experience in Beckhoff is a plus
Coding experience with automation and data processing. Object-oriented-programming in Python is a plus
